Norham village
Known locally as ‘Norrum', and nestled in the beautiful Cheviot Hills, Norham is steeped in history. Its strategic position on the River Tweed, near one of the most important crossing points, the locality has been the site of many battles between the English and Scots over the centuries.
As well as our hotel near Berwick, the village itself has a shop, butchers, bakers, a gun shop, and a Norman church, dating from 1170. However, it is thought that a church has stood in the village since the 8th century.
Norham Castle
This rugged Norman castle has stood for 900 years, and has seen plenty of action over the centuries, with numerous sieges, battles and occupations.
It was damaged and restored many times between 1100 and 1500, before peace between the English and Scots ironically brought the castle to partial ruin. Nevertheless, the main keep still stands as a testimony to a bygone age.
